New England Aquarium

One of the biggest tourist attractions in Boston is the New England Aquarium, which boasts of over 1.3 million visitors a year. There are great exhibits from different ocean environments. The New England Aquarium houses seadragons, turtles, sharks, jellyfish, seals, penguins, and more! The Great Ocean Tank is a four-story coral reef exhibit where there is always something to see.  There is even a hands-on learning area where you can explore the touch tank with sea stars, horseshoe crabs, and sea urchins. For people that are less interested in the marine wildlife there is also an IMAX Theatre.

Outside LA: Solstice Canyon

There’s way more than the Walk of Fame and Santa Monica Beach to see in and around Los Angeles. If you enjoy breathtaking views, get a car and start to visit all the Recreation Areas around the city. One of my favorite places I’ve visited in the three months I’ve been here is Solstice Canyon. Usually you can reach any place in L.A. by car, but here you have to park at the beginning of the hiking path, which starts around one mile off from Highway #1.

After a short walk along a tiny creek, you reach the ruins of an old-style house. “Robert’s Home” was built in the 1950’s and destroyed by a forest fire in 1982. What is left is the rest of some fireplaces and house walls.

Either you can continue on the marked path or take an alternative route following the river where you‘ll find small waterfalls.

After an hour of hiking you’ll finally reach the top of the walking path (not of the mountain) where you’ll probably stop for a second to take a deep breath and to enjoy the fantastic view of the Pacific Ocean.

On your walk down you can see all the leafless trees that burnt during the famous California forest fires. If you’ve got enough time, climb on one of the two mountains which enclose the canyon. Make sure you don’t forget your camera!

Sailing in the Boston Harbor

Now that it is warmer, Bostonians emerge from their winter hibernation and flock to do outdoor activities, such as sailing, kayaking, playing sports on in the park, and going to outdoor cafes and restaurants. ELC students celebrated the nice weather by going to a free promotional sailing day. While waiting for their turn to get the sailboat, the students hung out the bay cruise ship where there was live music and free drinks. Everyone enjoyed the scenic waterfront views of Boston. Some students learned to sail the boat and some students just relaxed. Either way it was a very pleasant way to spend an afternoon.

The first ever ELC Prom!

On Friday, April 30th, ELC Los Angeles organized their first ELC ‘prom’. Students and staff dressed up in suits and fancy dresses, and staff decorated the student lounge in ELC colors (blue and white). Students were able to have their pictures taken in front of a specially designed bower as they entered. We had a ‘Project Prom Dress’ competition where two teams of students designed a prom dress out of materials such a trash bags and tape!

Students enjoyed punch and snacks before we announced the Prom King and Prom Queen (voted for by students during the week). ELC’s director, Lisa Miller, crowned the students with the most votes! The winners were Damian Haas, from Switzerland and Flavia Monti, from Brazil, with  Shelly Xueer Men, from China and Valentin Kunz, from Switzerland, a close second. Finally, everyone headed over to Westwood Brew Co. to enjoy Happy Hour and celebrate at a prom ‘after-party’!

Karaoke!

Karaoke is a very popular activity in Boston. Teachers and students belted out their favorite tunes on stage. This impromptu karaoke night was a send off party for Eladio aka “Lalo” on his last night in Boston. Student and staff wished Lalo, a long stay student and ELC “blog star” farewell in style. You can read about Lalo’s experiences at ELC Boston from the entries on February 9th and March 9th.
