Valentine’s Day at ELC Boston

Last week, love was in the air at ELC Boston!  Our annual Valentine’s Day celebrations commenced last Thursday with our traditional bake sale and candy gram deliveries to benefit the American Red Cross.  Through delicious staff contributions, we were able to raise just over $100!  Students went crazy for Mei’s chocolate filled cookie cups and the scrumptious brownies from Andrea and Danielle.  Our candy gram deliveries were a surprise to students who received a chocolate rose from their secret admirer. Valentine's Day Dance
ELC’s Valentine’s Dance was an enormous success!  Students danced the night away to music from all around the world as Migren, ELC’s resident student photographer, took beautiful portrait pictures of everyone with their dates.  The fashion was simply to-die-for as students followed our dress code of “fabulous.”  Overall, the Valentine’s Day FUNtivities were a great way for our students to experience the chocolate-filled holiday that is Valentine’s Day.

Cupid, Candy Grams, & Cupcakes at ELC Los Angeles

Happy Valentine's Day
On Valentine’s Day, ELC Los Angeles was filled with love..and sweets! This year, we sold candy grams like previous years, and also had a cupcake decorating activity. Our candy grams were Hershey’s kisses roses that I handmade by putting together two Hershey’s kisses, cellophane, a lollipop stick, and floral tape. We sold three stems for $1 in the Main Office, and attached a little heart note where students could write a message. And of course, if students wanted to, they were allowed to keep the notes anonymous to surprise the recipient. It was a great success, and we will be donating any profit to a non-profit organization later on!

I had the privilege to be the ELC cupid this year, and delivered the grams with my bodyguard Nancy during Conversation class. The grams were sent not only to students, but to teachers and office staff members too. It was such a pleasure to see the pleasantly surprised faces when I delivered them to each person!

Later during lunch, we had free cupcakes, frosting, and sprinkles in the student lounge for students to decorate and eat. (Big thanks go to Vanessa, Liz, and Nancy for helping me bake those cupcakes!) Students were slowly trickling in at 12:40pm already, and then there was a sudden rush of students who came to claim their cupcakes. By 12:55pm, all the cupcakes had completely disappeared! Lesson of the day? Our students love cupcakes, and next time we’ll need a lot more than 100 cupcakes.

It was my first time celebrating Valentine’s Day with ELC, and I definitely had a pleasant day. I hope everybody else had a nice Valentine’s Day too!

Valentine’s Day at ELC Boston

Love was in the air this past Valentine’s Day for ELC Boston students.  They were given every opportunity to show that someone special how they feel this past holiday and they most definitely made the most of it.

First, students were able to participate in the Valentine’s Day fun by purchasing some baked goods at our bake sale. From the very start at 8:30 in the morning, students were definitely enjoying treats like brownies, cupcakes, even chocolate chip muffins brought in by the staff and teachers. Over the course of the holiday (and the following day – all items half off!) students raised upwards of $80.00 to be donated to the International Red Cross.

Students were also able to send anonymous Candy Gram messages to each other during conversation class. The fact that they were anonymous led to every type of message you can imagine, from endearing messages between couples to spunky jokes between friends. The Candy Grams were a great way to start off the day and to tell someone how you feel.

Finally, students were able to dance the night away with the people they’ve met here at ELC at our Valentine’s Day Soiree thanks to the hard work and dedication of our Administrative Assistant, Cara. She put together a beautiful ballroom right here in ELC where students danced to music from all over the world for hours on end.  We even had a ballot box to vote for Mr. & Mrs. Valentine. Everyone was ecstatic that Min-ji and Mohammed were crowned the lucky couple and their slow dance to “I Will Always Love You” was absolutely unforgettable.

Overall, it was a very successful holiday for students and staff alike here at ELC. It was a wonderful day for everyone to express how much they have grown to care about each other here in Boston.

ELC Los Angeles Fundraises for the International Rescue Committee for Japan

On March 23, 2011, ELC Los Angeles held a bake sale to help the earthquake relief efforts in Japan. Students, faculty, staff, and even neighboring offices and businesses turned out in massive numbers to contribute to the cause and to feast upon the homemade baked and fried goods donated by the same students and staff. Along with the generous baked donations of the Pacific French Bakery, the bake sale became even more wildly successful. ELC Los Angeles has previously worked with the International Rescue Committee (IRC) to aid relief efforts in Haiti, and now the IRC is working with Peace Winds Japan to assist humanitarian work in Japan.

Admin Assistant Yang Yang and Student Services Coordinator James Benito set up tables in the student lounge and were quickly overwhelmed with students before class, during breaks, during lunch, and even after school! Delicious fried pies, decadent brownies, cookies, frosted cakes, cupcakes, and Yang’s fried eggrolls quickly sold resulting in the bake sale total of $718!

In a gesture of pure generosity, ELC has decided to double the amount raised to a grand total of $1436!

ELC would like to extend a big “THANK YOU” to those that helped make this bake sale successful.

Valentine’s Day Charity Fundraiser in Boston

Valentine's Day Bake Sale for Charity

At ELC Boston we hosted our second annual Valentine’s Day fundraiser for charity. ELC students and staff raised a total of $297 in donations through the flower exchange and bake sale. Denisse and Aurore won the privilege of choosing the charity out of the group of people that donated $5 or more. They choose Water.org, which has transformed hundred of communities in Africa, South Asia, and Central America by providing access to safe water and sanitation. Water.org works with local partners to deliver innovative solutions for long-term success.

The class poses with the flowers they received on Valentine's Day!

The 28th Annual Scooper Bowl!

What is better than eating ice cream? Eating ice cream and donating to a good cause at the same time!  The Jimmy Fund Scooper Bowl supports cancer care and research at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute.  This amazing all you can eat 3-day event had 9 ice cream brands and 30 delicious flavors of ice cream! ELC students spent $8 each to get in and sample (or gorge) on ice cream and enjoy the musical entertainment.  What else could be better on a sunny afternoon?
