Boston students share their favorite places

Students were asked to weigh in on their favorite places in Boston and we got quite a variety of responses, ranging from the greatest places to eat to the best places to study and everything in between.

Ran from China told us that her favorite place in Boston is definitely Copley Square. As someone who loves to shop, Ran mentioned that from Copley you have access to Newbury Street, Copley Center, even the Prudential Center. She also said that there are lots of restaurants there, including Atlantic Fish Co., which is famous for its seafood. Finally she added that in Copley you can visit the Boston Public Library, “the most beautiful and comfortable place to study in Boston.”

Two of the Venezuelan students chimed in as well and told us the places that have stood out to them in Boston thus far. For Angel, he loves ice skating on Frog Pond. He says that although he came here not knowing how to skate at all, it has been a fun thing to learn with other people and a great way to laugh and make friends. Alejandro told us about his love for Tasty Burger, explaining that he loves the place because you can smell it from hundreds of meters away. He also noted that “eating Tasty Burger is like having heaven in your mouth.” Sounds like something that no student should miss!

Sultan from Saudi Arabia said that his favorite places include the Boston Common as well as Sweetwater Tavern. He loves the Common because it’s where he gets to practice soccer, his favorite sport, in the summer and Sweetwater because it’s a perfect place for students and staff to hang out after school.

Marc from Switzerland claims that his favorite area in Boston is the South End, where he is currently living. He says that the special architecture mixed in with the typical brick buildings as well as the small cafes and restaurants that you find there make it a unique place.

Junmo from Korea added that for him the best place to hang out in Boston is Harvard University. His reasoning was that there are any talented and intelligent people in the area and students like him have the opportunity to attend lectures and classes about history or current events. He recognizes that Boston has a lot of famous universities and colleges but that Harvard is the best place to hang out and meet people as well as a great spot to enjoy restaurants and delicious food.

Oh, the Places You’ll Go! (Boston)

In morning you often see the students with coffee from Au Bon Pain. Students often get lunch at the near-by food court City Place, because there is something for everyone! If the weather is nice you will see groups of students eating outside in the Boston Public Garden. Every week you can meet other students and play sports on the Boston Common.

On Fridays you might see students hanging out at the Sweetwater Café or the Rock Bottom Brewery. The best happy hour deals on food are at McCormick & Schmick’s. Do you love Italian food? Go to the North End! You can be the judge of which bakery has the best cannoli: Modern Pastry or Mike’s Pastry?  When you are in the mood for Japanese food, go to Shabu Zen in Chinatown! It has a great atmosphere and shabu-shabu is always fun group dining experience!

Have you heard of the Prudential Center? This iconic Boston skyscraper has the best views of Boston from the bar/restaurant the Top of the Hub!  The Prudential Center is also one of the main shopping hubs in Boston. You can continue your shopping excursion on the famous Newbury Street! You can stop for a refreshing snack at Pink Berry.

Do you like art museums, but it is not part of your budget? Not a problem! The Museum of Fine Arts is free on Wednesday afternoons after 4pm and the Institute of Contemporary Art is free on Thursday afternoons after 5pm. The unique Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum is $5 with your student ID!

On weekends you can head across the Charles River and check out Harvard and MIT. We recommend going on the unofficial “Hahvahd Tour” to hear all the stories that admissions will not tell you! It you want to learn about Boston and see the sights, go on the Beantown Trolley Tour! It is hop on-hop off, so you can explore the areas that interest you the most.

Bostonians loves their sports teams. Cheer from the home team at the Red Sox baseball games, the Celtics basketball games, and the Bruins ice hockey games! The Bleacher Bar overlooks Fenway Park! Across the street, you can see some of the most exciting musicians play at the House of Blues. Other fun music venues are the Paradise Rock Club, the Middle East, and the Brighton Music Hall.

Things To Do in Boston: Shopping!

Boston is a special city. It is excellent for shopping; if you visit Boston do not go to the stores, it’s like you have never been in this amazing city of the United States. You have here different places to do that. You can go shopping inside of outside and get any kind of gift for your relatives and friends.

  1. Prudential Center. This is located on Boylston Street, so it is in walking distance from ELC!!!! There are many different stores; you can find anything from souvenir shops to expensive brands and restaurants, etc. This mall is excellent for walking and shopping in any season. If it summer, it’s perfect for the air conditioning. If it is winter, you can get here a warm place to enjoy while you are enjoying any kind of food or store
  2. Newbury Street. It is a special street!!!! If you are looking for a more exclusive shopping experience such as Giorgio Armani Boutique, Banana Republic, Guess, Ann Taylor, etc., you should definitely check it out. All of these in ONLY one street!!!! You can also find a special store here: Second Time Around. In this store, you can get contemporary and designer clothes second hand.
  3. Downtown Crossing. Students, this place is very good for you because you can buy many things for less!!! If you like bargain hunting, you should go shopping in Downtown Crossing. Take the orange line and you will be around a lot of stores!

Advice for Boston students

Maybe you are thinking of leaving your country to improve your English. Coming to Boston would be a fantastic experience in your life, if you made the most of the all the opportunities.

It’s a marvelous city where you can find culture, art and students from around the world. You could meet new people every day, with whom you could practice your English and discover fantastic people among them, like I did. My new friends from ELC have become an important part of my life. Audrey from France, Anette from Angola and Isabella from Brazil are some examples of interesting people that I have met. There are also fantastic teachers in the school who will help you to achieve your goals. And if you socialize with the American people you’ll be very lucky because you can live a real experience of the USA.

Open your mind and you let yourself be seduced by this city where things such as walking along the Charles River, having a beer on Newbury Street, visiting museums (on the day when you don’t need to pay) and going out to parties are an authentic pleasure!

One last piece of advice… Keep away from the people of your country.  ;)

Good luck!
