ELC’s Hollywood Prom of Fame

_MG_6215

ELC’s annual Prom took place last Friday night, on May 31st. This year, we hosted the event at O’Hara’s in Westwood from 7:00pm to 9:30pm, and reserved the whole downstairs just for ELC. With over 80 students attending along with staff and some teachers, our Prom was packed with fun and glamour.

As always, our ELC photographer was our very own James Benito. To match our Hollywood theme, we laid out a red carpet with cut outs of the Hollywood Sign against the wall to serve as the background.

While the students enjoyed taking pictures, eating, and drinking with fellow students, we also collected the final votes for Prom King and Queen. After tallying up the votes, Vanessa announced our final winners for 2013… Tobi and Capucine! After we presented them with a crown, sash, and a prize, they enjoyed their King and Queen dance and pulled down the string for our balloon drop. Students continued to enjoy the night socializing and dancing, and even stayed around after the event.

I asked for some comments from Tobi and Capucine, regarding their thoughts on Prom and becoming Prom King and Queen.

King & queen2Tobi: “I appreciate that all the students chose me for their Prom King. I’m very lucky with my Prom Queen, I think she’s the best Prom Queen I’ll ever have. I hope I can do a lot in my year as King, and people can call me or text me when they have a good idea. I’m so happy to be the likeable-est student at the school! I appreciate it very much. Thank you guys, I love you all!”

Capucine added: “Prom was really really fun! Everyone was glamorous, and I’m very happy to be a Queen for Tobi. Without Tobi, I couldn’t have been Queen. “

A big thank you to all staff members for helping out before and during the event, and Tobi for being a great DJ and assistant for Prom! We hope everybody had an amazing night and got a taste of an American Prom! Check out more photos on our Facebook page.

ELC’s Sixth Annual Fiesta in the Park

Students Group Photo

EllynThis year’s sixth annual ELC Fiesta in the Park was held on a perfect day… May 5th! Cinco de Mayo! Fiesta in the Park is an annual party hosted by ELC Los Angeles for our students, homestay families, staff, and teachers to join together to enjoy a day with good food, good music, and good company. As usual, we gathered at Burton Chace Park in Marina Del Rey, and had a live Mariachi band for full entertainment. Ellyn, president and founder of ELC, also joined the Mariachi band to perform for us too!

Breaking Pinata

And for the first time, we also had a piñata for our students. A couple of students were blindfolded, spun around, and took turns trying to break open the piñata with a broomstick. Some students hit it so hard that the broom even got bent near the top! Although some were really close, our new student Melanie was the one who made the critical hit. As soon as the piñata spilled out the candies, students crowded around to pick up some treats for themselves.

Hula Hoop Game
Another item that was popular this year were the hula-hoops. We played a game where a line of students had to pass down a hula-hoop through each other, but while holding hands with the next person. We had two lines of students facing each other so that they could race and played for a couple of rounds, including a staff & teachers vs. students round. Students also played with the hula hoop on the side, and also utilized the rope to play jump rope and tug of war. Props definitely go out to one of our students, Tobi, for gathering our students and making our activities so lively!

Thank you and great job to Liz for planning such a great Fiesta! We all had a great time, and the pictures taken by James definitely reflect that. Check out our Facebook page for more great pictures!

4th Annual Fiesta-in-the-Park

On May 29th, ELC Los Angeles held its 4th annual Fiesta-In-the-Park at Burton Chace Park in Marina Del Rey. ELC staff, teachers, host parents, and students turned out in droves for this Sunday afternoon party. With colorful Cinco de Mayo decor, a talented and entertaining Mariachi band, and authentic Mexican food provided by Casablanca Catering, the celebration quickly became a hit with a record number of attendees enjoying their time. Attendees traveled from all directions and distances to Marina Del Rey for this event; Some took the bus and others even carpooled.

It was a great opportunity for the ELC community to come together. The perfect weather made this event an enjoyable outdoor activity as well. Burton Chace Park sits right near the marina and showcases beautiful grounds suitable for leisurely strolls and picnics. Attendees happily mingled in the warm sunshine with iced drinks loosely in hand. Countless silly and serious photographs were taken, and most importantly, new friendships were made.

Host family party in Los Angeles

ELC hosted a Fiesta in Burton Chace Park for ELC host-families and students. A live mariachi band provided music for dancing, and delicious Mexican food  and margaritas were served. It was a good opportunity for our host-families to get to know one another and ELC office staff!  Staff, teachers and students enjoyed themselves and posed for photographs, taken by office assistant James!

The mariachi band got Ellyn (ELC's president) dancing along to the music!

The host families are what make the homestay accommodations such a wonderful experience.
