IELTS Test Center

SHARE THIS WITH YOUR FRIENDS:
ELC - English Language Center 11 Beacon Street, 2nd Floor Boston MA

ELC Is an official IELTS Test Center

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a test that measures the language proficiency of people who want to study or work in environments where English is used as a language of communication. An easy-to-use 9-band scale clearly identifies proficiency level, from non-user (band score 1) through to expert (band score 9).

IELTS is available in two test formats – Academic or General Training – and provides a valid and accurate assessment of the four language skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking. See more at: https://www.ielts.org/what-is-ielts/ielts-introduction#sthash.bbAVAqKH.dpuf.

What is the IELTS test?

Q: What is the IELTS?

A: IELTS is the International English Language Testing System which tests English proficiency across the globe. Conducting 2 million tests in the past year, IELTS is the world's most popular high stakes English-language test for study, work and migration.

Q: Should I take the Academic or General Training test?

A: Choose the Academic test if you plan to pursue higher education at an English-speaking institution (community colleges, undergraduate, and graduate schools). Choose the General test if you are going to an English-speaking country for secondary education, work experience or training programs. People migrating to Australia, Canada, and New Zealand must sit for the General Training test.

Q: What is the IELTS test format and how long will it take?

A: IELTS has four parts – Listening (40 minutes), Reading (60 minutes), Writing (60 minutes) and Speaking (11–14 minutes). The total IELTS test time is approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes. The speaking exam is given on Saturday and will be scheduled between 12:40 to 6:30pm. If you need an early speaking test time, please contact the IELTS administrator before the exam to make arrangements.

If you have any questions about the tests, please feel free to contact ELC.

Register for the IELTS Test

Q: Where/How do I sign up to take the IELTS test?

  1. Go to the online registration website in the USA: http://www.ieltsregistration.org.

Under “City” you should select “Los Angeles”/”Boston MA ELC” You must have a pdf copy of your passport.
  2. On the Candidate Registration page, review the list of available IELTS test dates and click 'Register' on the date you plan to take the IELTS test. Then click the 'Apply Online' button and enter your contact details in the required application fields.
  3. Once you’ve entered your contact details, you will be directed to a page to add up to five organizations where you would like your IELTS results to be sent. Once you’ve entered your contact details, make sure the address you input is accurate because this will be the mailing address that your IELTS test site will use to mail you your IELTS test results. You will then be directed to a page to add up to five organizations where you would like your IELTS results to be sent.
  4. Before you submit the online application to book your test date, you will have one final opportunity to review the information provided for accuracy.
  5. After you complete and submit your online registration application, you will receive an acknowledgement email with IELTS test site contact details and instructions on how to submit payment. Payment is due within 5 days of your registration date. Delays in payment can cause your registration to be canceled. If you register within 5 days of the test, immediate payment will be needed.

Q: I registered for the exam online. How long before I can receive my confirmation?

A: Once payment and passport copies have been submitted, most confirmations take place between 1-3 business days.

Q: But I registered online today for an IELTS test tomorrow! Will I receive a confirmation?

A: If you register for an IELTS test that takes place within 5 calendar days, you MUST PAY AND SUBMIT YOUR ID IMMEDIATELY. Any delay in payment or receiving your ID will result in your application being rejected.

Q: I’m having trouble registering online. Can I fill in a paper application?

A: ELC Boston/LA is no longer accepting paper applications. If you are having trouble registering online, please contact the IELTS Administrator.

Q: I accidentally registered at another school! Can you transfer me?

A: ELC cannot transfer you from one school to another. If you are registered at another school, you need to contact that school directly.

Q: I can’t get my photo uploaded to the website. What should I do?

A: We will take your photo the day of the exam, so you can leave it blank.

Q: I want to register for a specific test day, but the date does not show up on the website. What should I do?

A: If the IELTS test day that you want is not available, it means that we do not offer an IELTS test that day or the IELTS test is full. In both cases, we are unable to register you.

Test day information

Q: What will I need to bring with me to the IELTS test site on my IELTS test day?

A: You must bring the passport/national identity card you used on the IELTS Application Form to the IELTS test. You can also bring a clear water bottle with the label removed. Phones, bags, pens, pencils and other personal belongings will not be allowed in the examination room and will be held in a secure area at the test site.

Q: When do I arrive for the test?

A: The test center will open at 8:00AM for check-in. The doors will close promptly at 8:45AM. Latecomers will not be allowed into the test center.

Q: When is my speaking test?

A: Speaking tests will held in the afternoon on the same day between 12:40PM-6:00PM. You will be assigned a 20-minute slot, determined at random. You are expected to keep the afternoon open for your speaking test. If special accommodations are needed, please contact the IELTS Administrator directly to request a specific time.

Availability of IELTS results

Q: When will I receive my IELTS test results?

A: 13 calendar days after the IELTS test date, on the second Friday after the exam. Results can be received in 2 ways: mailed to your US home address or picked up in person at ELC. On the day of the IELTS test, you will be given an envelope to write your desired shipping address, or you can put your name on a list to pick up you results in person. Students will need their passport to pick-up their results. An ID will not be sufficient. Test results CANNOT be released by phone, email or fax.

Q:. My IELTS test results are delayed - why?

A: IELTS test results are released on the 13th day after the exam on a Friday. There are 3 ways to get your scores:

  1. Pick up your scores in person on Friday. This is the fastest way. You must arrive before 3pm and you must bring a PASSPORT with you. You cannot pick up results for a friend.
  2. Check your scores online at https://results.ielts.org/>https://results.ielts.org. These appear on the website 12-24 hours after they are released, so usually Saturday morning (they are released in Australia starting at 5pm their time). NOTE: These are your official scores but they are not your official score transcript.
  3. Wait for your scores to come to your house in the mail.
    1. This can take anywhere from 2-8 business days. We ship them via USPS.
    2. If you want them shipped to you faster, you must make arrangements with the IELTS administrator and pay an additional fee.
    3. If they do not come to your house, it might be because you wrote your address wrong. Make sure your address is correct when you submit your registration! Don’t forget the apartment number, the city/state and the zip code.

Q: Why can’t I see my results online?

A: Usually because of these reasons:

  1. Information errors:
    1. Your name isn't exactly as it appears on the IELTS registration. Middle names are counted, initials, misspellings, etc.
    2. You are using your candidate number instead of your passport number on the form. Passport numbers could have errors as well (Ls and Is, for example).
    3. You did not put your first name. As you can see from the screenshot, the first name does not seem to be a mandatory entry. It is.

Q: How were my IELTS test results sent to me?

A: They are sent via USPS and can take between 3-7 business days. No tracking number is provided. Overnight delivery is available through FedEx for a $25 fee, and 2-day shipping for a $16 fee. A tracking number will be provided. Expedited international shipping is available through DHL for a $75 fee. A tracking number will be provided.

Q: It’s been over a week and I still haven’t received my results. What happened?

A: We will always notify you if your IELTS test results are going to be delayed. If you haven’t received your results in 3-5 business days, you can email your IELTS administrator.

    Common problems:

    1. You registered with an incomplete address. We do not know your apartment number, so if you left it off your results will be delayed.
    2. There was a national holiday that delayed mail service.

Q: My IELTS test results were withheld, why?

A: Your results may have been withheld for a variety of reasons.

    1. The personal information you provided for the exam did not match our records.
    2. You did not follow exam instructions.
    3. Your IELTS test has been held for quality assurance purposes.
    4. You will receive an email from the Administrator detailing the situation to you if this happens.

Q: How can I get a SACM/formal receipt for my exam?

A: Yes. If you pay for the exam at the test center, you will be asked to fill out a credit card authorization form. You can use that form as your official receipt. If you pay for the exam online, you will receive a confirmation email regarding your payment. Save that email as a PDF and that will serve as your official receipt.

Q: I would like to have a copy of my IELTS test results sent to an University/College but I did not select one while I was signing up for the IELTS test. How can I request this now?

A: You are able to send your IELTS test results to up to 5 institutions for free (all additional ones are $35). Notify the IELTS Administrator via email as soon as you want to send your IELTS test results. You must provide the complete address.

Q: How can I add my name to a waiting-list for an earlier IELTS test date?

A: You can notify the IELTS test Administrator that you are interested, but there are no guarantees. The IELTS test Administrator cannot delete or add anyone if there is not space, and the IELTS test Administrator cannot manually register you.

Q: Can I have another student take the IELTS test in my place? What is the process for that?

A: If you would like to give your IELTS test seat to another individual or someone wants to give you their IELTS test seat and payment, you need to contact the IELTS Administrator directly. IELTS Administrators will do everything they can to accommodate your request, but in many cases we cannot transfer the IELTS test over.

Q: Why can I see IELTS test dates in the past?

A: IELTS uses the international date system of dd/mm/yyyy.

Q: I disagree with my IELTS test results and want to have them rechecked. What should I do?

A: You can fill out an Enquiry on Results (EOR) form (available from the IELTS Administrator). The charge is $200 and it can take up to 6 weeks. Here is more information on EORs: http://takeielts.britishcouncil.org/find-out-about-results/questions-about-your-ielts-results
