The Summer Junior Program in Cambridge, MA gives students the opportunity to live and study in state-of-the-art facilities located at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Every Sunday students go on a full-day excursion.

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT MIT SUMMER CAMP

City: Cambridge, MA

Dates: The MIT Program is not available for 2017. Please consider our Wheelock College Program.

Ages: 14 - 17 years old

Course: Semi-Intensive English Program - 20 lessons per week (50-minute lessons)

Residence: MIT dormitory

Meals: 18 meals per week (full-board Monday - Friday, half-board Saturday, breakfast only Sunday)

Dormitory: Maseeh Hall

Occupancy: Doubles, triples & quads

Activities: Afternoon and/or evening activities Monday-Friday, full-day excursions each Sunday (Optional activities offered each Saturday)

Classic Programs: Consists of a mix of cultural, sports, sightseeing and shopping activities.

University Explorer Program: Includes College Readiness Workshop, university campus tours, and academic skills workshops.

Special MIT Explorer Program: Science and Technology Explorer - Explore research laboratories at MIT and Harvard University and visit high-tech companies around Cambridge and Boston.

Airport transfer: Included in the transportation fee, valid for Sunday arrivals and Saturday departures between 9am - 9pm

MIT SUMMER COURSES

Explanation of Courses

Number of levels: up to 12

English level evaluation with multi-level placement: Placement testing includes a grammar section, a writing section, and an interview with the Director of Courses. The three separate components of the test allow us to make accurate placements for each of the student's classes.

Grammar Structure and Usage

  • Teaches students the rules of grammar usage through communicative teaching methods.
  • Gives students the opportunity to practice using grammar in both speaking and writing.

Conversation, Listening, Vocabulary and Pronunciation

  • Gives students practice speaking in English and listening to and understanding English spoken by native speakers.
  • Provides students with feedback and special exercises to help improve pronunciation.

ACCOMMODATION at MIT

  • Double and Triple Room Occupancy
  • Rooms are furnished with beds, desks, chairs and closets
  • Bathrooms are shared by 4-6 students
  • Linens included
  • Bathrooms and common areas of your accomodation cleaned frequently
  • Laundry facilities located in the dormitory

  • Spacious student lounge
  • Use of athletic facilities
  • Free wifi
  • Use of MIT Student Center with bookstore, food court, market and shops

ACTIVITIES & EXCURSIONS

Students participate in afternoon activities Monday-Friday. Afternoon activities are compulsory and are included in the Junior Program package. Evening and Saturday activities are always optional and offered to all students. ELC always offers a combination of free and low cost evening and Saturday activities. Please refer to the sample calendar for sample activities.

Afternoon Activities Program

Students at MIT may choose from up to three different Activities Programs for their afternoon activity at no additional cost. Students may choose up to one program each week. Students must choose their selection at enrollment to ensure availability. ELC offers an optional week (Five State College Campus Tour) of visits to New England colleges and universities. In lieu of classes and regular afternoon activities students can spend the week going to a different and exciting destination each day.

  • Required that all students participate in the full-day Sunday excursion
  • Full-day Sunday excursions are included in the junior package

University Explorer Program

University Explorers will take college preparation classes that cover the SAT and TOEFL tests, as well as study skills and financial aid available to international students. In addition, they will visit local universities where they will participate in tours and information sessions. They will also work on essay writing.

ELC Junior Programs - English Language Center

ELC offers summer residential junior programs for students between the ages of 11- 13, and 14-17 years at four different locations: UCLA (Los Angeles, CA), UCSB (Santa Barbara, CA), and Wheelock College (Boston, MA), and MIT (Cambridge, MA). All junior programs take place in July and August. Junior Programs are carefully supervised by ELC staff and include a full range of exciting activities and excursions in addition to course and accommodation.
